Try this great tip now to boost your PC's performance...

Use this tip straight away today to make your computer run faster

Over time Windows becomes clogged up with helper applications installed alongside the tools and software you install on your PC. These helper applications are launched when Windows starts, and take up valuable processor time and memory, slowing down your PC.

Many of these helper applications aren't really needed anyway, and can safely be turned off to make your system run faster. Simply press [Windows Key] + [R], type MSCONFIG and click OK. When the System Configuration Utility opens, click on the Startup tab, and untick any helper applications that you don't need. When you're done, simply click OK then restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

Following this tip will give you a performance boost on any Windows system.

Shortly, I’ll tell you about the nine most common things that are slowing down most PC user’s machines. I’ll show you how you can instantly prevent your machine from letting in viruses. And I’ll show you how you can get a free 6-week trial of this product, as well as dozens of exciting tools and software free on CD.

But first, I wanted to tell you why the The Windows Advisor is better than any other source of PC information and advice you could ever hope to get your hands on – especially as you get access to dedicated email support and have your specific queries dealt with individually by experts...

Even specialists are amazed!

The truth is that there is certainly no shortage of advice for the PC user. From hundreds of books and magazines to literally thousands of sources on the Internet, you could spend weeks of your life trawling through page after page of information. Some of it would be good. Some of it would be terrible. And the chances are you still wouldn’t have the answers to all your questions.

The Windows Advisor is your one-stop shop for PC advice and assistance. You get everything from the most basic operating advice to the highest level professional secrets that can help you run your system like a dream. In fact, we’ve had thank you letters in from both professional and home users agreeing that it really is the best source of information they’ve ever seen:

“…it’s great to sort out problems that otherwise I would have pulled my hair out over… 12 out of 10.”
Jeff Page, Abergele

“I have subscribed to all sorts of magazines and publications during my IT career, and none of them match the standard of the Windows Advisor.”
Myrddin Thorogood, Swindon

“ … the essential IT support book is here. Many of the problems and the solutions and the detail of what ‘is going on under the hood’ are dealt with.”
Stuart Ranson, IT support professional

“May I say again how impressed I am with the way people at Windows Advisor respond to questions. If all other help lines responded as quickly it would go a long way to reducing stress levels of the nation.”
James Ross, Lanarkshire.

“Thank you very much for your detailed response to my problem. I must congratulate you on identifying the cause of my problem and for the clarity of your instructions on how to repair the fault. I shall be recommending your service to others.”
Gerry Cotton, Somerset.

Close the door to viruses, killers and spies for good

Do you remember the notorious ‘I Love You’ virus? It spread across the Internet like wildfire. It was spread still further via CDs and USB memory sticks. The part of your computer that leaves your system wide open to these attacks is your PC’s automatic loading function. Hackers program a few lines of code and then the malicious programs install themselves automatically on your hard disk and cause havock.

But there is a simple way you can prevent this from happening - without any need for expensive security software. All you need to do is to stop Windows from automatically launching programs contained on removable drives such as CDs and USB memory sticks.

Windows XP Pro, Vista and 2000 users simply need to use the GPEDIT tool, by following the steps below:

  1. Press [Windows Key] + [R], type GPEDIT.MSC and press [Enter].
  2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then click System (Windows Components in Vista).
  3. In the Settings pane, right-click Turn off Autoplay, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box, and finish by clicking OK.

turn off autoplay properties

Users of other Windows systems don't have the GPEDIT tool, and so have to disable the Autoplay feature by tweaking a setting in the registry. We'll show you everything you need to know about safely editing the registry in article R 11 in the Windows Advisor manual.

Applying this tip shows you how to prevent viruses from easily infecting your system, but if you should become infected and your system starts to behave erratically, what should you do? Simply follow article A 2 in your Windows Advisor manual for all the information you need on dealing with nasty virus and spyware infections on your PC.

The 9 most common causes of slow-moving computers

One of the remarkable things about computer usage and ownership is how few people realise that their computers are running as much as five times slower than they ought to – due to incorrect settings and excess baggage. These all eat up memory and make your computer drag its feet. But there are lots of things you can do right away to clear up all the mess and make your computer run faster.

Whenever you install new software on your system for example, you will often install lots of extra features and tools that you don't need, and create lots of digital junk in the form of temporary files used by Windows as part of the installation process. This causes your system to crash more often and become generally lethargic. Article I 4 in The Windows Advisor manual will show you how to fix this problem.

And how about all those temporary files, Internet files and general files in your Recycle Bin lying around your computer like the mess in a teenager’s bedroom? Imagine how much faster and cleaner your computer could work if you did it the favour of cleaning up all that mess!

In article O 4 you’ll find step-by-step instructions showing you exactly how this can be done. Your Windows Advisor manual will also show you how to fix the eight other common causes of a slow computer that crashes too often. These include too little disk space, too many utilities and data bottlenecks.

Save yourself hours of time and a lot of expense

When you start finding out more about how your computer works it can be very liberating and addictive. If you’re the kind of person who likes to ‘get under the bonnet’ then you’ll love The Windows Advisor. Even if BIOS, motherboard or SCANREG mean nothing to you today, you’ll very quickly become a PC ‘Mr Fix-It’. In fact, you may soon find yourself helping other people fix their computer problems too!

Next time your computer fails to start, refuses to function properly or throws up an error message, you’ll be able to get straight to the source of the problem within a few minutes. The Windows Advisor gives you the checklists and shortcuts that will save you time and money.

What to do next time your computer crashes

What do you do, for example, if your computer fails to start up properly? Your First Aid Kit will show you how to boot the computer using the emergency disk. S 32 will show you how to launch Windows in Safe Mode, while H 16 will show you how to check that your hardware is working properly.

This information alone could one day save you from throwing your old computer out!

Learn to use fabulous functions you never knew you had

And the Windows Advisor isn't just about fixing problems. For instance, did you know that Microsoft Word has several built-in tools to help you write documents more quickly and accurately? In article W 21 I'll show you what they are.

The Windows Advisor will also show you:

  • How to use the autocorrect function to its full effect
  • How to integrate new functions into Word
  • Wonderful little tips that even the Word operating instructions don’t tell you about
  • How to customise the Word toolbar so it does what you want it to
  • All the best shortcuts only the real anoraks know
  • Dozens of other tricks that will transform you into a better computer wizard than all your friends – and even the kids!

There's a new version of Windows coming –
Is it worth making the switch?

Windows Vista has been widely acknowledged as a commercial flop, with many users deciding to stick with the tried and tested Windows XP. However, Microsoft are planning to address some of the criticims of Vista with the up coming release of Windows 7, so will it be worth making the switch?

While Windows 7 may look superficially like Vista, Microsoft have worked hard to tweak things under the hood, to make a leaner, meaner operating system that runs faster on today's PC hardware.

In The Windows Advisor we’ll be showing you what Windows 7 has to offer, whether it’s worth updating, and what version is best suited to your needs. We’ll also bring you all of the latest information on diagnosing and troubleshooting Windows 7 problems, as well as tweaking your PC for best performance.

If you're considering upgrading, you'll first need to check that your PC's hardware is capable of running Windows 7. Microsoft have stated that at minimum you will need a 1 GHz system processor, 1 GB of system RAM and at least 16 GB of hard disk space available.

If you aren't sure whether your PC meets these requirements, you can quickly check on its capabilities by following the steps below:

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > System. Here you will be able to see your system's RAM and hard disk size.
  2. Click OK, then open My Computer.
  3. Right-click on the C: drive, and choose Properties. Here you will find the amount of hard disk space you have free.
  4. Click Cancel to close the window.

You’ll find all the important information on Windows 7 in future Windows Advisor updates. In fact our automatic updating means you’ll always stay up to speed on everything new that’s happening. You’ll know what to do about bugs, how to customise your system and so on…
